TTArtisan 27mm AF 2.8 Lens

$149 Pancake Lens For Fujifilm

TTArtisan recently came out with their first autofocus lens, a 27mm 2.8 pancake. I think this is one of the best value autofocus lenses currently, coming in at only $149.  Its available for the Fuji X mount, Sony E Mount, and Nikon F mount.

All the sample photos are shot on the Fujifilm X-Pro1, paired with the TTArtisan 27mm f2.8. It’s been a great combo as an everday carry, very lightweight, and compact.

This lens doesn’t have that vintage Leica m glass look like many other ttartisan lenses, but more of a modern design like most autofocus lenses.

It has a nice clicked Apeture ring that’s smooth to operate and it’s probably my favorite feature of this lens.  The Apeture range is from 2.8 to f16

The build quality is solid, it’s an all metal body with good weight to it and For the price  it feels very well made.

27mm on an APS-C camera  is equivalent to roughly 40mm on full frame, which is a standard focal length.

If your one of those people that goes back and forth between the 35 and 50mm focal length,  this could potentially be a great choice since you can consolidate two lenses into one.

This focal length gives you a really natural perceptive , it’s not too wide and it’s great for everything.

Sharpness

I generally shoot between 5.6 and f8 most of time and I find the lens to be plenty sharp. Keep in mind, I’m shooting on an 11 year old X-Pro1, so I’m not exactly looking for technical perfection here. The lens is sharp but wide open it gets a little soft in the corners, and loses some contrast.

Rendering

When shooting this lens wide open at its minimum focus distance, (0.32m) you get this swirly bokeh effect in the out of focus areas. It reminds me a little bit of photos I’ve seen with those vintage Helios lenses just not as strong of an effect. Contrast and sharpness seems to be best between 5.6-f8 and if you stop down even more  you can get some decent Sunstars. Also flares can be pretty extreme in backlit situations.

Autofocus

First of all, this lens is going to perform best of any of the newer Fujifilm bodies.

The X-Pro1 is notorious for being pretty slow. Even on this camera, the lens seems to autofocus pretty well in good lighting conditions. It hunts a little bit in low contrast scenes, but that could be the camera itself.

For the way I shoot, this lens has performed perfectly and I haven’t missed any shots I wanted to get.

If you don’t need autofocus, TTArtisan makes some cheaper manual focus lenses for the x mount. I love manual focus lenses,  but focus peaking on the X-Pro 1 is nowhere near as good as some of the latest digital cameras.

If you were to buy the 27mm Fujifilm equivalent of this lens, your looking at about $400.  I’ve never used that lens, so I can’t say it’s better or worse, but for $149 you can’t go wrong with this budget option.

If you want a great walk around lens for general purpose or street photography, I think you’ll be happy with this lens.

I love having a small and compact setup, I think this lens punches above its weight class considering it’s price.

This is the best value autofocus lens for the x mount.
